FIBS versus MacFIBS

Players are sometimes confused by the difference between FIBS and MacFIBS, and in particular what my (Paul Ferguson's) role is with FIBS.

FIBS refers to the server, which is software that allows people to meet and play backgammon on the Internet. The FIBS software runs on a Linux system; there is only one server on the Internet (at fibs.com) to which all FIBS users connect. The FIBS software was written by Andreas Schneider; FIBS is currently maintained by Patti Beadles.

MacFIBS is a Macintosh application designed specifically to communicate with the FIBS server. You install and run MacFIBS from your Macintosh to play backgammon on the FIBS server. (Players on Windows machines may use similar applications, such as WinFIBS, BBGT, or FIBS/W--none are as powerful or elegant as MacFIBS, however.) MacFIBS is developed and supported by me, Paul Ferguson.

Note that I have no role or responsibility for the FIBS server hardware or software. In particular, I cannot help with:

    • system problems with FIBS
    • lost or forgotten passwords
    • player disputes

Refer to the troubleshooting section for more information about resolving these and other problems.
