Moving checkers

During match play, you can move checkers directly by dragging them, or you can use the mouse and keyboard together to move checkers without dragging.

Moving checkers with drag and drop

Drag a check from to a different position, just as you would on a real backgammon board.

When you begin dragging, the pips that are potential targets for the move will be marked with a red bar on the edge of the board, and when the checker moves over a target pip, the pip will be outlined with a red box. (This behavior can be disabled by unchecking the Highlight target pips checkbox in the Board section of the Preferences window.)

Moving checkers by clicking

If you double click a checker, it will attempt to move the checker first by the leftmost dice. If the leftmost checker has already been used, or if moving the leftmost checker is not a valid move, it will try to move by the rightmost checker.

For example, if you roll 6-3, when you double click a checker, it will attempt to move it 6. If you have already taken the 6, or the pip 6 points away is blocked, it will try to move it 3.

If you option-click a checker, it does the same thing as double clicking.

If you command-click a checker, it attempts to move the rightmost checker (3, in our example) first, followed by the leftmost checker (6).

Sending your moves

Nothing is sent to FIBS while you are moving checkers. When you've taken your two moves (or one, three, or four moves depending on the circumstances), click either of your dice on the board. If Sound is enabled, you will hear your dice being picked up from the board. The dice remain on the board until confirmation is received back from FIBS that the roll was accepted. You can see the move command and response from FIBS in the Terminal window (you must have the Verbose Commands and Verbose Messages preferences enabled to see these).

Undoing moves

When you click the dice, you have committed that move; it's too late to change your mind!

Before you send your move, if you make a mistake in moving or simply wish to make a different move, you can take back a move using one of three methods:

    1. drag the checker back to its original position,
    2. use the Undo Move (Cmd-Z) command (under the Edit menu),
    3. refresh the board (Cmd-B) to reset to the board position before you moved any checkers. This undoes all moves you have made this turn.
